FAQs
What is art therapy and how does it work in Lakeland, FL?
Art therapy is a mental health profession that combines creative expression with psychological healing. At Lakeland Art Therapy, we use art-making as a way to help you explore thoughts and feelings that might be hard to put into words. You don't need any artistic experience—it's not about creating a masterpiece! The creative process itself becomes a powerful tool for processing emotions, working through trauma, and discovering new insights about yourself. As art therapists and talk therapists, we can help you navigate life's challenges through whichever approach feels most comfortable for you.
Do I need to be artistic to benefit from art therapy in Lakeland?
Absolutely not! One of the most beautiful things about art therapy is that it's designed for everyone, regardless of artistic skill or experience. The focus isn't on creating "good" art—it's about the healing that happens through the creative process. Many clients are surprised by how freeing it feels to create without judgment. Whether you're someone who hasn't picked up a crayon since childhood or you're naturally creative, art therapy meets you exactly where you are and helps you express what's in your heart.
What types of therapy services does Lakeland Art Therapy offer?
We offer a comprehensive range of services to support your healing journey. Our services include individual art therapy sessions that blend creativity with traditional talk therapy, EMDR therapy for trauma processing, and group art therapy sessions that build community while promoting emotional wellbeing. We work with clients ages 6 and older, providing both in-person and virtual sessions. Each approach is tailored to your unique needs and goals, creating a supportive environment where you can explore, heal, and grow at your own pace.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a $100 late cancellation fee. This policy is in place because I reserve that time exclusively for you, and without sufficient notice, it’s often not possible to offer the spot to another client.
Can I do art therapy virtually?
Yes! You can absolutely do art therapy virtually. All you’ll need is a few basic materials in your home—or wherever you choose to join our session. These don’t have to be fancy or expensive; even something as simple as a sketchbook and a few pens, pencils, or markers will work just fine.

How does EMDR therapy work and is it available in Lakeland, FL?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a specialized therapy that helps your brain process traumatic memories in a healthier way. During EMDR sessions, you'll focus on specific memories while following guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This process helps reduce the emotional intensity and distressing symptoms associated with trauma. Research shows EMDR can be highly effective for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related challenges. As a trained EMDR therapist in Lakeland, I provide a safe, supportive space where you can work through difficult experiences and find relief from symptoms that may have been affecting your daily life.
Does Lakeland Art Therapy accept insurance or offer payment options?
Yes, we accept insurance to make our services as accessible as possible! We also welcome private pay clients and have limited sliding scale spots available. At this time we are in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health and Quest. We are pending approval with Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare. We are also an approved provider of the Step Up for Students Scholarships.
What should I expect during my first art therapy session in Lakeland?
Your first session is all about getting to know each other and creating a comfortable space where you feel safe to explore. We'll start by talking about what brought you to therapy and what you're hoping to achieve. There's no pressure to dive into art-making right away—we'll go at whatever pace feels right for you. When you're ready, we might try some gentle creative exercises or simply explore different art materials together. Think of it as a conversation that happens through both words and creativity. Every session is designed around your needs, and there's never any judgment about what you create or how you express yourself. Our time together is truly your time to heal, discover, and grow.
Can I do EMDR virtually?
Yes! EMDR can be done virtually. Many clients successfully process and heal through secure video sessions, using specialized tools and techniques adapted for online delivery.
